Things I hate about the DC area: Traffic
A Photo A Day – Apr 6, 2010.
One of the worst things about the Washington, DC metropolitan area is the traffic. This was evening rush hour around the capital beltway (I-495) at 5:45pm. The traffic was actually much worse behind me, but I didn’t want to risk a picture while driving in that. I was heading to College Park to meet some friends for dinner. According to mapquest, this commute is 23 miles and should have taken me 30 minutes (which translates to 20 minutes in real life), but it instead it took me over an hour in rush hour traffic.
According to the The Daily Beast, the DC Capital Beltway is the 3rd worst commute in the nation, after the Hollywood Freeway in Los Angeles and the Lunalilo Freeway (H-1) in Honolulu.
Suprisingly, I-270 was not listed on this study (I did see it on an AAA site once). I-270 is a 5 lane express highway, with 2 additional local lanes that starts at the top of the Capital Beltway and ends up narrowing to 2 lanes towards Frederick, MD. The problem is that many people have moved to Frederick, MD and further north because the cost of living is less but the jobs are still down here, therefore there’s much more commuter traffic than ever before.
I can’t believe the CBGB awning is no longer there

although I *love* how they divided the street for car and bicycle traffic – nice job!
